GPU mining farms and large mining operations are primarily concerned with mining profitability, which hinges on the efficiency of their GPUs. There is at least one reason workstation cards were not in high demand when gaming cards were, power consumption.

Workstation and Professional GPUs are perfectly suited for mining cryptocurrency and in drastic times, calling for drastic measures, possibly the only feasible solution. I will discuss Computational Unit (CU) count ( AMD-specific) later in this article, as it was one spec I used when selecting a workstation GPU for mining crypto. In terms of GPU computational power, you can get an idea of crypto mining performance by simply looking at a GPU’s technical specifications. This doesn’t really mean much as gaming GPUs can also handle intense computational workloads, clearly evident by their mass adoption in GPU crypto mining. Contrast that with gaming cards that are typically optimized for display and processing gaming workloads. Workstation graphics cards are workhorses, packed with features for intensive computing performance to satisfy demanding computational applications. Obviously, GPU specifications may not tell the complete story on how a GPU will mine crypto but comparing specs relevant to mining can help. Modern gaming GPUs are much more configurable and efficient but this makes them harder to obtain and more expensive. The biggest advantages for workstation cards are: ease of use, stability, price and used market. Using workstation class GPUs for crypto mining provides some advantages over gaming graphics cards but also has some downsides. These were some of the daunting challenges faced by prospective crypto miners, take the advice of the experts, a noob getting into crypto mining is not possible anymore. Outrageous GPU prices, competition against corporate miners with large budgets, soaring mining difficulties… oh, and GPU demand outpacing the market supply making decent GPUs all but unobtainable. Stop focusing your energy on why you can’t do something and instead direct that energy towards figuring out how you can. History proves that the experts often get it wrong because they are experts on the “now”, not necessarily the “to be”. Think for yourself, develop your own strategy. Instead of focusing on “Why you can’t”, focus on figuring out “How you can”. I have to tell you this… remember it… believe it… the answer to surviving and thriving in the crypto market is the same answer to nearly every other challenge in life. Though these times don’t provide an ideal entry situation for beginner crypto miners, creativity and looking past the FUD to find a solution make it possible. There is a way, regardless of the current GPU prices and regardless of bull or bear crypto market. Was it possible for new crypto miners to get into crypto mining on a household budget, during the time of high demand in a space dominated by corporate mining? The answer is yes, new miners could and still can enter into the crypto ecosystem. Let’s take a journey back to the end of last year, when crypto prices were soaring and with it, the price of GPUs.

Crypto miners and gamers will be selling their used GTX and RX cards to upgrade to the latest, more efficient and more powerful newly released GPUs. We are on the final countdown until the releases of the next generation GPUs from NVIDIA and AMD which should bring further price reduction for the current generation graphics cards. Happy days for crypto miners! The graphical processing unit (GPU) shortage that has plagued the last few months appears to be letting up and GPU prices are nearing MSRP again.
